Show & Hell

ZPs: Portal 2 and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, bizarrely
XPs: Innovation and sequels

But wait! Get ready to spooge yourself stupid because Gabriel and I have recorded another podcast. And this time, we even came up with a format for it. So, may I formally introduce the first official Show & Tell Podcast.

Basically, Gabriel and I both assembled two or three objects without the other knowing, and attempt to discuss them on topic for as long as we reasonably can. In this introductory episode, Gabe questions the role of print in gaming news and totally spergs out over Doctor Who, while my Melbourne adventures somehow segue to the subject of Osama Bin Laden and I bemoan how my neuroses have ruined my danish pastry experiences.

The Show & Tell Podcast 1 by yahtzee19

Well, while you're listening to that I'll also get out of the way the news that Yahtzee's Trivia Night continues to be on alternate Mondays. This Monday, as a matter of fact, May 16th. There's an LA Noire theme for the prizes and the general promise of a somewhat good time with very little browbeating.

  12. I loved the podcast, but unfortunately for Doctor Who fans, Moffat is even WORSE than Davies at making characters we care about.

I'm probably grasping at straws, but I'm gonna try and get my mother to play the orinial portal.
My hope is that the pacing of the tutorial sessions will ween her into it.
    We'll see.

  16. Lovely podcast guys. So, is it going to get a title at some point? Somehow, "Yahtzee and Gabe's Show and Tell Podcast" has unfortunate implications...

  18. what i didnt like about the new doctor who is that in an episode of david tenants run he said that the comoflage thing is broken but the new matt smith run has the ship rebuild itsself and the ship changes to a new blue box but for no reason it still doesnt change its camoflage.

(doctor who is shit anyway but it was the only good thing on tv besides US imports)

  19. Russel T. David IS shit, I completely agree with Gabe. Everyone was saying how great he was, I thought I was the only one sitting there thinking W.T.F! No he aint! He's completely shit! I like this Gabe, he sounds trendy and cool xD haha!

  20. What is wrong with me that I don't see the issues that Gabe is complaining about vis-a-vis Steven Moffat and Russell T. Davies? I'm not saying Gabe is wrong; I'm simply saying I don't see it.

Certainly there were some stories from the Tennant serials that I thought were overwrought crap (Christmas Space Titanic, or whatever it's proper name was). And I agreed with Gabe in his disdain for "Last of the Time Lords." But I thought "Midnight" was very inventive and creepy. And I also much enjoyed "The Waters of Mars."

So I'm not sure what it is I should be looking for that I'm supposed to find rubbish.

  21. "how active our minds are" hah, I think it's our generation's ADD. I don't think modern multi-tasking is really a good thing. I guess you guys are just superior beings because I feel like my intelligence has actually dropped since the promulgation of the internet age.

Maybe my multitasking skills need work.

Now what were you saying? I was looking that shit up. I think part of it might go to the bit about not being in control--when you're singletasking you can't give selective attention as easily. I don't know how often you find this happening, but oftentimes things won't initially interest me that will unfold new layers.

Also, nice terrorism apologism from Gabriel. I do agree that "they hate our freedom" is a retarded narrative--although there is a truth there, I don't think it should be listed as the main motivation--and I also don't consider Al Qaeda or UBL masterminds--somewhat clever, although nothing that extensive or adaptive. Bear in mind, terrorist organization's stock and trade is generally elder chickenhawks capitalizing on a moment of fervor, rushing them through training then getting them to kill themselves quickly before the fervor wears off. Not conducive to highly trained operations.

But I do object to characterizing UBL as not alien or not a Hitler. He did say in his 1998 fatwa that killing civilians anywhere they're found is Muslim duty, until his political aims were accomplished. I do in fact view this worldview as totally alien. And describing the Taliban solely as a nationalistic enterprise with no other aims is hyper-naive.

I also hate how leftists often bend over backwards to justify "underdogs" as rational, merely pursuing basic national dignity, no matter how despicable the group acts, no matter how many irrational elements are jumbled up in the complicated thing called motivation. While also denying any possibility of the "overdogs" rationally pursuing their ideals or the welfare of their state/people. Not that that was necessarily what was in Gabe's mind, but I caught strong whiffs coming from his direction.

  23. Well Damn. Keep it coming guys. Yahtzee's endless misanthropy and paranoia is refreshing and hilarious, and Gabe works well as a foil, enhancing your psychosis. I also love some non-american viewpoints, I don't know if my paranoia is quite as severe, but my perceived media control here in the states is insane, but at least we don't outlaw mortal kombat. For better or for Worse.

  26. Alright so, I'm a long-time follower (since back in primordial 2007) and I'm a fan of Yahtzee's humor in all its forms.

    I'm also an American.

So here's where that leads me, re: the reaction to OBL getting killed by American SEALS. Most people here who had a significant emotional reaction to the news were not trumping up Bin Laden's importance. Back in 2001 (this is when you were a teenager in a country other than the U.S.A.) he orchestrated an attack that killed 3000 of our countrymen, friends, and family.

Those people who demonstrated and chanted outside the White House that night were interviewed by news outlets. A lot of them knew people who were killed on 9/11/01 and had waited 10 years for justice.

So, to those people, OBL wasn't Doctor Doom. He was a terrorist who killed someone close to them. In other words, it was deeply personal and deeply national.

So when you say that the people lined up at the gates of the White House (which is in America) and chanted U.S.A! U.S.A! (a.k.a. America) were somehow being inappropriate, I have to respond that you don't understand the sentiment here.

Did they make themselves an easy target for folks from other country who view that kind of exuberance with arch-browed disdain? Of course. But it wasn't about any other country (and certainly not about -- how did you put it -- intergalactic sports?), it was about Americans killing a terrorist who killed Americans.

We had our moment, and now it's barely in the news anymore here. It's not like we tried to organize a world-wide rave.

  28. I know exactly what you mean by the schoolbus window thing. I imagined that when I was bored on the bus back in middle school and high school. I never thought of it much beyond that, or I'd've reached the small world thing too; I was bored and never gave it much thought.
